Ubuntu started packaging gnome shell

[live.gnome.org]

$ sudo apt-get install gnome-shell
$ gnome-shell --replace

I started to like it more and more. Frees up some space at the bottom. Makes most activities search-based, no need for Gnome-Do anymore. At the moment slower than compiz on my old ATI card.

I don't get it. Is this the new gnome with the fancy GUI?

Yep, that's the new one.

Ohhhhh. Yeah, I just installed it as shown above. It is pretty slick. But, my 6 year old graphics card kinda lags. I have some old government surplus boxes as my daily driver towers. I like the simplicity of the current gnome, especially the lower system resources. I hope that this will not be the gnome default. If so, I'll be keeping a couple of disks with the current gnome for my archives!

No, it will not be the gnome default, at least not in the next Ubuntu release: [www.omgubuntu.co.uk]

I've made it default on my laptop for now:

ln -s /usr/share/applications/gnome-shell.desktop ~/.config/autostart/gnome-shell.desktop
